The first major ocean crossing - the Atlantic, with about three weeks at sea. Heading towards the Canaries the weather becomes warmer as the crew seek the trade winds needed to take them towards the Equator. A key tactical decision is whether to pass the Canaries to port, starboard or go through the middle of the islands.
